General Membership Meeting
June 30th, 2022
Hosted by Art Pic

Thursday June 30th, Marina Keiser and Art Pic hosted a Summer Evening
General Membership Meeting, with dinner by Taco Truck Savage Tacos…oh so good
and Aperol Spritzers too!

Host Marina raffled off four exquisite pieces of original art to some lucky winners,
and guests mingled inside among the artwork and outside with blooming vines covering
the gates for a bucolic setting.

Executive Director Gene Cane and Business Member/Board Member JoAnn Vara led a brief announcement of recent SDSA achievements and upcoming events

Thank you to Marina Keiser and Art Pic for artful evening!
General Membership Meeting
July 21st, 2022
Hosted by Haptor Barrett

It was so good to be back at the L.A. Mart for the July SDSA General Membership Meeting hosted by Greg Haptor and Haptor Barrett.

Guests were treated to delicious bites and beverages in a beautiful showroom.
The furnishings were so comfortable that it was hard to leave! Door prizes were raffled and members updated on the latest SDSA happenings. Greg Haptor provided some fascinating insight into the family business and let our decorator members know that they are there
to work with you!

Thank you to Greg, Alejandra, Elvira and everyone at Haptor Barrett for a lovely evening!

In a Few Words...

Which talent would you most like to have?
Does teleportation count? I often feel like I need to be in 5 places at once, opening set, on a scout, a zoom meeting, going through buyers' photographs, meeting with my lead person or production designer or running in to solve an issue on set. If I could teleport quickly to these things and then home to bed I’d be thrilled!
Realistically, I wish I had better drawing skills!

What do you consider your greatest achievement?
That I have made a career doing something I love.
I grew up in Kansas without knowing that this was something that I could do for a living, and now I can't imagine doing anything else.

Which word or phrase do you most overuse?
“That’s the jalapeño!”
Let me explain that...  While working on a show I accidentally dropped a jalapeno outside a taco truck set and left it.  When the on set dresser came in for the day, he asked if I left it there on purpose or if he should clean it up.  I told him it was on purpose.  The next time we opened a new set and he saw a couple stray candy wrappers on a desk, he asked if that was 'the jalapeno' and I said ‘yes’.  ‘That’s the jalepeno’ has become the small set decoration pieces that you instinctively want to clean up but are left on purpose to bring life to a set!

What do you look for on the Craft Services table?
I'm a long term vegan with a couple mild food allergies, so I'm always asking questions especially since covid has done away with the self serve crafty table.  I definitely favor a savory snack, but have been known to get pretty excited over apple slices with peanut butter!

Please name a benefit of being an SDSA member.
The sense of community is one of the greatest benefits.  This is a very resourceful and talented group of people with a wealth of knowledge to share. When you are the only decorator on a busy show, it is easy to feel like you're an island.  Being part of the SDSA has changed that for me, and I love how we often uplift and celebrate each other and our amazing body of work.
