The Art of Production Design Saturday, March 11th, 2023
The Art of Production Design Oscar Panel, hosted by the ADG, SDSA and Variety,
happily returned to an in-person event this year. Held locally at the Regal Sherman Oaks Galleria Theater, the event also streamed live globally.
Production Designer Nelson Coates opened the panel discussion introducing the moderators, Production Designer Thomas A. Walsh and Set Decorator Jan Pascale SDSA, who led fascinating and insightful discussions with the teams from each film.
The panel of Academy Award nominees for Production Design included the following design teams:

SXSW Austin, TX
Set Decorators Carol Silverman SDSA and Carla Curry SDSA were the featured speakers at a panel discussion program at this years SXSW.
Put together by Carol Silverman SDSA, the session titled, Who is the Set Decorator and What Do They Do?, was held at the Austin Convention Center on Monday March 13th.
The session was described as - Without scenery, films and TV shows would just be radio. Some people watch and accept what they see without question, which is fine. One might say that if the audience isn’t focusing on the sets, then they’re doing their job. On the other hand, some people wonder, what is all that stuff? Where did it come from? Who put it there? We are here to explain it to you. From the mundane to the fantastical, from the book on the shelf to the custom printed wallpaper to the grain silo in the field and the many, many lamps lighting the way, we will reveal the Secrets of the Set Decorator: how we make movie magic and tell the story of the story.
