In this Issue: Crew-Lateral Damage, Strike Support, Ariel Awards, Members in the News, and Lance Totten SDSA in the Set Decorator Spotlight!
CREW- LATERAL DAMAGE Saturday, July 22nd 2023
History For Hire's parking lot was the place to be on Saturday, July 22nd.
The "Crew-Lateral Damage Parking Lot Sale" was presented by SDSA Business Members with an aim at increasing awareness of the predicament of those who work in the industry and the businesses who serve them.
Props and goods were available for sale by industry vendors that have never been open to the public before. Support services were also on hand including Film LA, The Motion Picture & Television Fund, Property Masters Guild and Valley Industry and Commerce Association.
A big thank you to Pam Elyea and Corri Levelle for bringing us all together and doing the heavy lifting, to History For Hire for hosting the event, to all of the SDSA members that put up a tent, loaded in their goods, and to the members who attended and supported.
STRIKE RESOURCES EVENT August 26th, 2023
A Strike Resource Event was held on Saturday August 26, 2023 at History for Hire.
The event was a big success with a lot of people getting some much needed help.
Though it was a hot day, the event was a great example of how government and CBOs
can quickly come together to meet the needs of our residents.
Thanks to LA County Film Office Department of Economic Opportunity.

This column regularly features an SDSA Business Member, shining a spotlight on the vendors, providing an opportunity to introduce or remind us about their offerings and services. A chance to say, 'Hey, over here! Come shop us!"
So very many of these businesses were just turning the corner and rebounding from the world pandemic known as COVID-19. We thought and really hoped that words like "unprecedented", "pivoting" and "shutdown" were in the rear-view mirror. But then we rounded the corner and there was a new word, "strike."
The WGA and SAG/AFTRA strike became unprecedented in how long it has lasted with the WGA coming to a tentative deal after 148 days. Now, with SAG/AFTRA next in line to get the AMPTP back to the table, while we see a light at the end of the tunnel we are not yet out of the woods. Businesses that could, pivoted, while others downsized and reduced hours. Where there had been some government and state support during COVID, there has been none with the strike. There have been casualties. Sadly, some true go-to's have shutdown forever and will be sorely missed. We pray that those that find themselves close to the edge can hang on.
The SDSA Business Members Committee Zoom gatherings that were born during the pandemic have continued in bringing members together to commiserate, brainstorm and offer support, and have created a tightly-knit community. We'll call that a silver lining!
And so, for the Spotlight in this issue, we are shining a light on all of the SDSA Business Members! The Website Committee has launched a beautiful revamp (Check it out! www.setdecorators.org) which includes the return of the Business Member Directory in a new downloadable digital format.
As you return to work we hope that the SDSA Business Members Directory will become your best friend. We can't wait to hear from you and see you!

In a Few Words...
Which Talent Would You Most Like to Have?
In regards to our craft, I wish I could sew. Although I was a Set Dresser for many years before becoming a Decorator, sewing is one skill
I never developed and I think it would still be a good talent to have, in a pinch. It’s never too late to learn, I suppose!
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Aside from my 25 year marriage and 2 wonderful children, I’d have to say that professionally my greatest achievement is maintaining a 30-year career in the entertainment industry in an area that’s not traditionally known for it, specifically Atlanta, Georgia.
Which word or phrases do you use the most?
“Killer.” As in “those freaking sconces are so killer.”
What do you look for on the Craft Services Table?
Only 3 things really: coffee, water, and chewing gum. The modern-day spin on Craft Service as an adjunct catering service is totally lost on me.
I don’t understand this thing of being served 4 hot meals in a 12-hour period. Of course, I don’t work on set so it doesn’t matter to me personally, and I know many set crew-people skip catering altogether now and simply get fed by craft service and that works well for them. But I secretly wish Craft Service would go back to rakes and brooms and taking out the trash on set and just keeping
a pot of coffee out on a table to “service the crafts”, as in its original studio incarnation.
Please name a benefit of being an SDSA member
I think for me it’s been getting to know fellow Set Decorators from others parts of the country, and other parts of the world too! Hearing about their specific struggles as well as our common gripes and concerns has been illuminating. I’m always keen to learn how other folks tailor the work of set decoration to the specific strengths and challenges of their respective environments.
If anything, I’d like to have more open sharing about rates and crew disparity between our various regions, and see what all we can learn to aid us in our individual negotiations going forward, since we are mostly on our own in that regard.
